Asteroids hurtling toward Earth might sound like a sci-fi plot, but planetary defense is very real, and the Pulverize It (Pi) Project is one of the most innovative solutions being developed today. What if we could break an asteroid into harmless fragments before it even reaches our atmosphere? That’s exactly what Pi aims to do.

In this video, Rachel Phillips, GSA’s Science Communication Fellow, sits down with planetary defense experts Brinn Bailey and Sasha Cohen to discuss how the Pi Project works, why it’s unique compared to other methods like deflection, and how it can protect Earth even when we have very little warning. From asteroid fragmentation to preventing atmospheric shockwaves, Pi represents a major step forward in keeping our planet safe from space threats.
